# What is AI red teaming? Explained

A plain definition of AI red teaming, what testers try, what a business gets back, and how it differs from ordinary testing.

Definition

AI red teaming

AI red teaming is structured adversarial testing of an AI system. Testers act as attackers or misusers to find flaws and harmful behavior before real users do. Applied to large language models, it is often called LLM red teaming.

**In short:** Attacking your own AI to find flaws first.

## What is AI red teaming

1. Attack
Testers act as attackers or misusers.
2. Find flaws
They look for ways the system fails.
3. Fix
The owners close the gaps.
4. Retest
The same attacks run again.

The idea comes from security. A red team plays the attacker, and a blue team defends. IBM describes red teaming as ethical hackers running a simulated attack that does no real damage.

In ai red teaming, the target is an AI system, not a network. NIST's generative AI profile (AI 600-1) defines it as a structured testing effort to find flaws and vulnerabilities in an AI system.

NIST says this often happens in a controlled setting and with developers. This is what red teaming in ai means: someone tries to break the system on purpose so you learn where it fails.

## What a test covers and what comes out

* Injection and jailbreaks
Input that overrides the system's instructions.
* Data leaks
Private details shown to the wrong person.
* Harmful output
Biased, false or unsafe answers.
* Agent misuse
An agent doing what it should not.

A good test goes beyond one trick. Testers try to make the system behave badly in the ways your business would care about.

Findings are ranked by severity, so the serious gaps get fixed first. After the fixes, the team retests to confirm they worked.

The work is usually done by people outside the build team, because fresh eyes spot different problems.

Testing lowers risk but does not remove it. It fits inside wider [AI risk management](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/ai-risk-management) and supports [AI governance](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/ai-governance).

## Why companies do it

2024

* 233 documented AI incidents
* Public database count

2025

* 362 documented AI incidents
* Same database, same method

AI problems are showing up in the real world. The AI Incident Database logged 362 documented incidents in 2025, up from 233 in 2024, according to the Stanford AI Index 2026.

These are public incidents, not a count for any one company's systems. Still, the trend explains why more teams test before launch.

Hallucinations are one reason. The same Stanford report found rates across 26 top models ranging from 22% to 94% in one accuracy benchmark, so errors are common enough to plan for.

## AI red teaming vs QA and penetration testing

Ordinary QA

* Expected use
* Does it work as designed?
* Normal inputs

AI red teaming

* Hostile or odd use
* Can it be pushed off course?
* Crafted attacks

Ordinary QA checks that a system does what it should under expected use. Red teaming checks what happens when someone pushes it to do what it should not.

Penetration testing probes software and networks for technical holes. AI red teaming adds the model's own behavior, such as being talked into harmful output.

It also differs from guardrails. [AI guardrails](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/ai-guardrails) are the safeguards you build in, and red teaming tests whether they hold. One common attack is [prompt injection](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/prompt-injection).

FAQ

## AI red teaming questions

* ### What does a red team do in cyber security?
A red team copies the methods of real attackers in a controlled, nondestructive exercise. IBM calls it a form of ethical hacking. The aim is to expose weak points before a genuine attacker finds them.
* ### What is the difference between red teaming and blue teaming?
The red team attacks and the blue team defends. Red teams look for ways in, while blue teams detect, respond and close gaps. Running both together shows how well your defenses hold up.
* ### Is AI red teaming the same as penetration testing?
Not quite. Penetration testing targets technical holes in software and networks. AI red teaming also tests model behavior, such as being tricked into leaking data or producing harmful output.
* ### Does AI red teaming remove risk?
No. Testing finds problems that exist today and helps you rank and fix them, but new flaws can appear as the system or its data changes. Many teams repeat tests and fold them into [AI governance consulting](https://nexumautomations.com/services/ai-governance-consulting).
* ### Does the EU AI Act require red teaming?
Adversarial testing duties apply to providers of the most capable general-purpose models, not to ordinary businesses using AI. Most companies are not covered by those specific rules. The [EU AI Act](https://nexumautomations.com/guides/eu-ai-act) guide explains who must do what.
