Definition

ISO 42001

ISO 42001 is the first international, certifiable standard for an artificial intelligence management system (AIMS), published in December 2023\. This is what ISO 42001 means: a set of requirements for running AI responsibly inside an organization.

**In short:** A certifiable standard for managing AI.

## ISO 42001 vs NIST vs EU AI Act

The three compared on what they are, whether they bind you and whether you can be certified.

## What is ISO 42001 in plain words

* First of its kind
The first certifiable AI management standard.
* Management focus
Covers the whole AI program, not one tool.
* Auditable
An outside body can certify a company against it.
* Familiar format
Follows the common ISO clause layout.

The ISO 42001 standard describes how an organization should set up, run and improve the way it manages AI. It is about management, not about one model or tool.

Think of it as a rulebook for the whole AI program. It covers who is responsible, how risks are weighed and how systems are watched once they are live.

It is published jointly as ISO iec 42001\. An outside body can audit a company against it and issue a certificate.

The format will feel familiar to anyone who knows other ISO standards. It adds topics on how AI affects individuals and the public. This is not legal advice.

## What the standard asks of an organization

1. Context
Know your AI and who it affects.
2. Leadership
Name owners and set policy.
3. Planning
Weigh risks and set goals.
4. Operation
Run AI under the rules.
5. Improve
Review, audit and fix.

Like other ISO management standards, it is organized into clauses. Clauses 4 to 10 are the core requirements, and a set of Annex A controls sits alongside them.

Cloud Security Alliance notes that clauses 6 and 8 are expanded to cover how AI interacts with people and the public sector.

Auditors look for evidence in each area, such as written policies, named owners and records of reviews.

* Context: the AI your organization uses and who is affected
* Leadership: named owners and a clear AI policy
* Planning: risks and goals for your AI systems
* Support: skills, resources and documented information
* Operation: how AI is built, bought and run day to day
* Evaluation and improvement: checks, audits and fixes

## Do you need it, and how certification works

1. Scope
List the AI you use and build.
2. Gap check
Compare practices to the standard.
3. Close gaps
Write policies and assign owners.
4. Internal review
Test your own system first.
5. Outside audit
A certifying body checks the evidence.

For most companies it is voluntary. It becomes a real need when a customer or a procurement team asks for proof of AI governance.

The usual route is simple. Define your AI scope, find the gaps against the standard, close them, run an internal review, then pass an outside audit.

## How ISO 42001 differs from NIST

ISO 42001

* A management standard
* Voluntary, certifiable
* Audited by outside body

NIST and EU AI Act

* NIST: voluntary guidance
* EU AI Act: binding law
* Neither gives an ISO certificate

ISO 42001, the NIST framework and the EU AI Act often get mixed up, but they do different jobs. One is a certifiable management standard, one is voluntary guidance and one is a law.

NIST describes its AI Risk Management Framework as intended for voluntary use.

The EU AI Act is a legal framework that sets obligations by risk level. For some high-risk systems, the obligations are delayed to 2 December 2027.

In practice a company can use all three together. Our [EU AI Act guide](https://nexumautomations.com/guides/eu-ai-act) covers the law, and [AI governance](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/ai-governance) explains the wider topic.

FAQ

## ISO 42001 questions

* ### What is ISO 42001?
ISO 42001 is an international standard for an AI management system, published in December 2023\. It sets requirements for governing AI inside an organization, and a company can be certified against it by an outside auditor.
* ### What is the difference between ISO 27001 and ISO 42001?
ISO 27001 covers information security management. ISO 42001 covers how an organization manages AI, including risks to people. Many companies run both, since AI also touches security and data protection.
* ### What ISO standards are there for AI?
ISO 42001 is the main management system standard for AI. Other ISO and IEC standards cover narrower AI topics, so check which one your customer or auditor actually names before you start.
* ### Is ISO 42001 mandatory?
No. It is voluntary, and no law requires it by name. It becomes expected when a customer, partner or procurement team asks for proof that your AI is governed, as the AI Index 2026 survey suggests.
* ### Does ISO 42001 replace the EU AI Act?
No. The EU AI Act is binding law, while the ISO standard is voluntary. A management system can help you organize evidence, but it does not by itself prove legal compliance. See the [AI risk management](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/ai-risk-management) entry.
* ### Who should lead an ISO 42001 effort?
Usually a risk, compliance or IT lead with support from leadership and the teams that use AI. IBM notes that legal departments are key stakeholders, so involve them early.
