# What is a vector database? Explained

A plain definition of a vector database, how it finds matches by meaning, what embeddings are, and where a business actually uses one.

Definition

Vector database

A vector database is a database that stores embeddings, which are lists of numbers that capture meaning, and finds the closest matches by similarity instead of exact words. It is what people usually mean by a vector db.

**In short:** A database that searches by meaning.

## What is a vector database

Regular database

* Matches exact words
* Misses different wording
* Returns records that contain the term

Vector database

* Matches on meaning
* Finds similar wording
* Returns the closest items

A regular database looks for exact matches. Ask for "refund policy" and it finds records that contain those words.

A vector database works differently. SAP describes it as a database built to store and search a special kind of data called vector embeddings.

So when someone asks what is a vector db, the short answer is the same: a store that finds items that mean something similar, even when the wording differs.

Because it matches on meaning, a question about "getting my money back" can still land on a page about refunds.

## How vector databases work

1. Embed
Content becomes a list of numbers.
2. Index
The numbers are organized for speed.
3. Ask
Your question is turned into numbers too.
4. Match
The closest items come back.

Vector databases share three core steps, whatever tool packages them.

First, a model turns each piece of content into an embedding. Next, the database indexes those embeddings so it can look through them fast.

Then a question is turned into an embedding too, and the database returns the nearest ones. Coursera explains that these stored embeddings allow rapid similarity searches that surface contextually relevant data.

## Embeddings and semantic search

* Embedding
A list of numbers that captures meaning.
* Similarity
How close two embeddings sit to each other.
* Semantic search
Finding results by meaning, not exact words.

What are embeddings? SAP calls them numerical representations of data created by machine learning models. Two pieces of text with similar meaning get similar numbers.

What is semantic search? It is searching by meaning rather than by matching words. A vector database makes this possible by comparing embeddings.

Keyword search would miss "cheap flights" when the page says "low-cost airfare". Semantic search catches it.

## Where a business uses one

What it does

* Finds relevant passages
* Powers search by meaning
* Suggests similar items

What it does not do

* Write the final answer
* Decide what is true
* Replace your source documents

The most common use is answering questions from your own documents. The vector database finds the right passages, and a language model writes the reply. Our entry on [retrieval-augmented generation](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/retrieval-augmented-generation) covers that pattern.

Researchers describe the retriever as a crucial part of that setup, since its output feeds the language model. They also note the approach can reduce made-up answers.

Other uses include searching a large knowledge base and suggesting related products or articles.

A vector database does not write the answer. It finds the material. A [large language model](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/large-language-model) turns that material into text.

## Vector database versus traditional database

The two are built for different jobs, and many systems use both.

A traditional database holds structured records such as orders and customers, and finds them by exact values. A vector database holds embeddings and finds them by closeness of meaning.

If you need a precise record, such as one invoice number, use a traditional database. If you need the most relevant passage among thousands of documents, a vector database fits better.

FAQ

## Vector database questions

* ### What is a vector database in simple terms?
A vector database stores content as lists of numbers that capture meaning, then finds the items closest to a question. It searches by meaning instead of exact words, which suits document search and AI assistants.
* ### What are vector databases used for?
Businesses use vector databases to answer questions from company documents, search large knowledge bases and suggest related items. They often sit behind an AI assistant that retrieves passages before it writes a reply.
* ### How do vector databases work?
Content is turned into embeddings, which are indexed. When someone asks a question, it becomes an embedding too, and the database returns the nearest matches. Read more on [generative AI](https://nexumautomations.com/glossary/generative-ai) for what happens next.
* ### What is the difference between keyword search and semantic search?
Keyword search matches the exact words you type. Semantic search matches meaning, so different wording can still find the right result. Vector databases are what make semantic search possible.
* ### Does a vector database write answers?
No. A vector database only finds relevant material. A language model reads what it finds and writes the answer, which is why the two are used together. See [RAG vs LLM](https://nexumautomations.com/compare/rag-vs-llm).
