# AI adoption rate, by source and year

The AI adoption rate depends on who is counted. These figures separate all firms, large firms and surveyed executives, each with its publisher, population and year.

## How to read adoption statistics

All firms (Census)

* 18% of all firms use AI
* 32% weighted by employment

Survey respondents (McKinsey)

* 78% use AI in a function
* Counts executives who answered

Two numbers can both be called the AI adoption rate and still describe different groups. One counts every firm in a country; the other counts executives who chose to answer a survey about their organization.

The first group lands near 18% in US official data. The second lands at 78% in McKinsey's survey. Neither is wrong, but they cannot be placed on one trend line.

Weighting matters too. The Census paper reports 18% of firms but 32% when firms are weighted by employment, because larger employers use AI more often.

## AI adoption in the US: size and sector

* Very large firms
50-60% use AI in knowledge-heavy sectors.
* Finance workers
63% report work-related generative AI use.
* Professional services
62% report the same.
* Very small firms

5.8% use rate for 1 to 4 employees.

Size and industry explain most of the gap. Among very large US firms in information, professional services and finance, use reaches 50-60%, or 60-70% weighted by employment.

Small firms are not far behind in one respect. Firms with 1 to 4 employees had a 5.8% use rate in the older Census series, second-highest of any size class.

The same Census analysis projected another six years for the largest size class to reach 25%, and about 15 years for the smallest.

Worker-level data points the same way. In Federal Reserve data, finance leads on generative AI used for work, at 63%, with professional services at 62%. For sector detail, see the [AI in financial services](https://nexumautomations.com/guides/ai-in-financial-services) guide.

Another check is how AI is used. Two thirds of US firms that use it only augment tasks, and job cuts tied to AI show up in 2% of firms.

## The EU and OECD readings

What the OECD figure shows

* Firm-level AI use kept growing
* Growth slowed versus earlier years

What it leaves out

* The share of firms using AI
* Adoption among individuals

Outside the US, the OECD reports that firm-level AI use grew 42.4% in 2025, a slowdown from earlier years. That is a growth rate, so it does not say what share of firms use AI.

The OECD also notes that more than one third of individuals across its countries used generative AI tools in 2025\. That counts people, not companies.

Official EU readings by company size and country follow the same pattern as the US: larger firms lead and smaller firms trail. Check each statistical office for its own definition before comparing countries.

## What these figures do not tell you

1. Who was counted
All firms, large firms or survey respondents.
2. What was asked
Producing goods, any function or work use.
3. When
Before or after the November 2025 change.
4. Who paid
Official statistics or a vendor survey.

Dates matter. In November 2025 the Census changed its question from AI used to produce goods or services to AI used in any business function.

Readings before and after that change are not one series, so the 3.8% of 2023 and the 18% of 2026 should not be read as growth.

Survey type matters. McKinsey and Stanford report on surveyed respondents, and a high number there reflects who answered.

Definitions matter. Across 16 surveys, estimates of work-related adoption ranged from about 5% to 40% as of mid-2024, with the spread driven mostly by method.

Use is not value. McKinsey finds 37% of respondents report a positive profit effect, and 6% are high performers. The [AI statistics](https://nexumautomations.com/statistics/ai) page covers investment and returns.

## What this means for a 10-500 person company

* Benchmark fairly
Compare with firms of your size and sector.
* Start narrow
Pick one costly process first.
* Close the skills gap
Expertise is the most named barrier.

A firm in this range sits between the groups. It is likely to be ahead of the 18% average for all firms yet behind very large firms in knowledge-heavy sectors.

The practical reading is to measure against firms like yours, not the largest headline. The [AI adoption](https://nexumautomations.com/guides/ai-adoption) guide explains how to begin with one process.

Lack of internal expertise is the barrier named most often, at 49% in one report, so a short [AI strategy consulting](https://nexumautomations.com/services/ai-strategy-consulting) conversation can help before any tool is chosen.

Methodology

## How we chose these numbers

1. We include figures from official statistics, research institutes and named surveys only.
2. Every figure shows its publisher, the group counted, the wording used and the year, with a link.
3. Numbers that count different groups stay apart, so none are blended into one adoption rate.
4. Wherever older and newer Census readings meet, the November 2025 question change is flagged.
5. When a newer release replaces a figure here, the figure and the update date change.

FAQ

## AI adoption rate questions

* ### What is the current AI adoption rate for US businesses?
Census data show 18% of US firms used AI in a business function between November 2025 and January 2026, and 32% weighted by employment. The Federal Reserve cites the same 18% for year-end 2025\. Surveys of executives report much higher shares.
* ### Why do adoption surveys disagree so much?
Surveys count different groups with different questions. Across 16 surveys, estimates of work-related AI adoption ranged from about 5% to 40% as of mid-2024\. Always check who was asked and how.
* ### What is the enterprise AI adoption rate?
Large organizations lead. Among very large US firms in information, professional services and finance, use reaches 50-60%. In McKinsey's survey, 40% of respondents at organizations above $1 billion in revenue say they are scaling AI agents.
* ### What is the AI adoption rate by country?
AI adoption by country is hard to compare. Official figures exist for the US and the EU, and the OECD tracks countries in its own series. Definitions differ across statistical offices, so compare countries only when they use the same question and year.
* ### What is AI adoption by industry?
Knowledge-intensive sectors lead the AI adoption rate by industry. The Federal Reserve reports work-related generative AI use of 63% in finance and 62% in professional services. Other sectors sit lower. See [AI in healthcare](https://nexumautomations.com/guides/ai-in-healthcare) for one example.
* ### Is the 3.8% figure still current?
No. It came from the Census question asked before November 2025, which covered AI used to produce goods or services. The newer question covers any business function, so the two are not one series.
* ### Does adopting AI mean higher profit?
Not automatically. In McKinsey's survey, 37% of respondents report a positive profit effect from AI, and 6% are high performers crediting it with 5% or more of profit.
