What is generative AI?

A plain definition of generative AI, how it differs from predictive AI, how its models learn, where businesses use it, and where it falls short.

Definition

Generative AI

Generative AI is software that creates new text, images, code or audio by using patterns learned from large amounts of data. That is the generative ai definition in one sentence: it makes new content instead of only sorting or scoring what already exists.

In short: AI that writes, draws and codes from learned patterns.

Generative AI meaning in plain words

  1. 01

    You give a prompt

A question, a task or an example.

  2. 02

    The model applies patterns

It draws on what it learned in training.

  3. 03

    New content appears

    Text, image, code or audio.

  4. 04

    A person checks it

You review before anyone relies on it.

The generative ai meaning is simple. You give the system a prompt, and it produces something new that fits the prompt.

The output can be an email draft, a picture, a block of code or a voice recording. It is new in wording or form, but it is built from patterns the system learned earlier.

Which is the best description of generative AI? A tool that predicts what a good answer looks like, one piece at a time, and assembles it for you.

Generative AI defined simply: models that create new text, images, code or audio from patterns in their training data.

How a generative AI model learns

  1. 01

    Collect examples

Large sets of text, images or audio.

  2. 02

    Train

The model learns to predict the next piece.

  3. 03

    Test

Weak spots are found and corrected.

  4. 04

    Adapt

Tuned to your own tasks and data.

A generative ai model is trained on very large collections of examples, such as text, images or recordings. During training it adjusts itself until it can predict what comes next in a sequence.

Nobody writes rules for it by hand. The model finds the patterns itself, which is why it handles messy, free-form input better than fixed software.

Many current models are multimodal. What does multimodal generative AI refer to? It refers to one model that can read and produce more than one kind of content, such as text and images together.

Generative AI vs predictive AI

Predictive AI

  • Estimates what will likely happen
  • Outputs a score or a forecast
  • Example: churn risk

Generative AI

  • Creates new content
  • Outputs text, images, code or audio
  • Example: a drafted reply

Predictive AI looks at past data and estimates what is likely to happen, like next month's demand or a customer's risk of leaving. Generative AI produces new content.

Is ChatGPT a generative AI? Yes. It writes new text in response to a prompt. A churn score that ranks customers is predictive.

Businesses often use both: a predictive model flags the customer, and a generative model drafts the message. See predictive analytics for the other half.

Which are use cases of generative AI

  • Drafting

    Emails, proposals and reports.

  • Summarizing

    Contracts and long documents.

  • Support

    Answers to customer questions.

  • Coding

    Writing and reviewing code.

Which are use cases of generative AI? The common ones are drafting emails and proposals, summarizing long documents, answering customer questions and writing code.

Adoption is already wide. The Federal Reserve reports that about 41 percent of the workforce used generative AI for work as of November 2025.

Company use is spread across sizes. A Philadelphia Fed survey found about 57 percent of large firms, 46 percent of midsize firms and 51 percent of small firms using it.

Errors, hallucinations and privacy limits

Handles well

  • First drafts and summaries
  • Answering routine questions
  • Reformatting and rewriting

Needs a person

  • Facts that must be exact
  • Confidential data in unapproved tools
  • Final decisions with real consequences

Generative AI can state false things in a confident tone. This is called a hallucination, and it is why people review important output. See AI hallucination.

Data privacy needs care too. Staff should not paste confidential client or patient data into tools the company has not approved.

NIST publishes a profile of its AI risk framework just for generative AI, which shows how seriously risk management is treated. For the wider topic, see AI governance.

FAQ

Generative AI questions

  • Generative AI is software that creates new text, images, code or audio from patterns it learned in training data. You describe what you want in a prompt, and it produces a draft for you to review.
  • Generative AI means AI whose job is to make new content rather than only classify or score existing data. Writing an email reply is generative; flagging a risky invoice is not.
  • A tool that drafts a customer email, a model that turns a prompt into an image, and an assistant that writes code are all examples. Our generative AI examples page lists more.
  • AI is the broad field, covering anything from forecasting to image recognition. Generative AI is one branch of it that produces new content. Many AI systems used in business are not generative.
  • Safe use depends on the tool and the rules around it. Approved tools, clear limits on what data staff can enter, and human review of important output reduce the risk.
