Will AI replace jobs? What the research says

Which tasks AI already takes, which work stays with people, what the data says about jobs created and lost by 2030, and how roles are changing.

Updated 8 min read

The short answer

Will AI replace jobs? Some, yes, but mostly it replaces tasks inside jobs. The World Economic Forum expects more jobs created than displaced by 2030. Routine, repeatable work is most exposed. Judgment, trust and hands-on work are the safest.

Key points

  • AI takes tasks first, whole jobs less often
  • WEF projects 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced
  • Routine, rules-based work is the most exposed
  • People who learn AI tools earn more
  • Some workers will face a gap between jobs

Side by side

Exposed work versus protected work

Will AI replace jobs?

Created by 2030

  • About 170 million new jobs
  • Equal to 14 percent of today's employment

Displaced by 2030

  • About 92 million jobs
  • Equal to 8 percent of current jobs
  • Net gain of 78 million jobs

The honest answer is that it will replace some jobs and change many more. The pattern so far is that AI absorbs tasks, not entire careers.

The best-known forecast comes from the World Economic Forum's 2025 Future of Jobs report. It expects new roles equal to 14 percent of today's employment, about 170 million jobs, by 2030.

The same report expects displacement equal to 8 percent of current jobs, about 92 million. The net result is growth of 7 percent of total employment, or 78 million jobs.

So the question is less whether work disappears and more which work moves, and how fast people can follow it.

Jobs that AI will replace first

  • Data entry

Typing and moving data between systems

  • Scheduling

    Routine appointment booking

  • First-line support

    Answers to common customer questions

  • Report drafting

    Standard summaries and updates

  • Document checks

    Sorting and checking paperwork

Which jobs will AI replace first? The ones built from repeatable steps that follow clear rules and produce text, numbers or forms.

What type of jobs will AI replace most easily is a question about task types, not job titles. The same title can mix exposed and protected tasks.

What jobs will AI not replace?

Stays with people

  • Skilled trades and hands-on repair
  • Care work and teaching
  • Negotiation and relationship selling
  • Leadership and decisions under uncertainty

Moves to AI first

  • Data entry
  • Routine scheduling
  • Standard report drafting

Jobs that AI will not replace share a few traits. They depend on judgment in messy situations, on trust between people or on physical work in changing places.

That is the plain answer to what jobs will AI not replace: work where a person has to decide, persuade, care for someone or fix something in the real world.

Even there, AI will help. A nurse, an electrician or a negotiator can use it for notes and prep, yet the core of the job stays human.

How many jobs will AI replace by 2030?

How many jobs will AI replace by 2030 depends on whose forecast you read. The WEF figure of 92 million displaced jobs is the most cited, and it sits beside 170 million created.

How many jobs will AI replace by 2050 is far harder to say. Forecasts that long assume technology, regulation and business habits that nobody can know today, so treat them as scenarios, not promises.

What jobs will AI replace by 2040 or 2050 is therefore better read as a direction: more tasks automated, more roles redefined, more new work in areas that barely exist now.

The gap between losing and finding work

  1. 01

    Tasks automated

AI takes routine parts of a role

  2. 02

    Role shrinks

Fewer people are needed for the same work

  3. 03

    Search period

Displaced workers look for new jobs

  4. 04

    New work

    Roles appear in growing areas

Goldman Sachs adds a caution. It notes there could be a period of higher unemployment while workers displaced by AI look for new jobs.

That gap matters even if the long-run numbers are positive. A net gain across the economy does not help the person whose role has just disappeared.

This is why retraining and early adoption in the workplace matter more than the headline totals.

Does AI skill pay more?

Workers who learn AI tools do better. PwC's 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer, as cited by one industry blog, reports a 56 percent wage premium for people with AI skills.

The takeaway is practical. Whether or not a job is exposed, knowing how to work with AI tools is becoming part of doing it well.

A basic grounding in AI literacy is a reasonable first step for most teams.

Will AI replace sales, finance or IT jobs?

  • Sales

Follow-up and drafts automated, selling stays human

  • Finance

Routine coding and reporting shifts first

  • Marketing

    Drafts and scheduling speed up

  • IT

Tickets and routine fixes most exposed

Will AI replace sales jobs? It takes over lead follow-up, data entry and first drafts, while relationship selling and negotiation stay human. See AI in sales.

Will AI replace finance jobs? Routine reconciliation, coding and reporting are the first to shift. The accounting research below shows why that is a change of work, not an end of it.

Will AI replace marketing jobs? Content drafts, scheduling and reporting speed up, while strategy and brand judgment remain with people.

Will AI replace IT jobs? Support tickets, alert sorting and routine fixes are the most exposed. Design, security judgment and system ownership are not. See AI in IT operations.

Will AI replace engineering jobs? Coding assistance changes the daily work. Our guide on software engineers covers it in detail.

Will AI replace cybersecurity jobs?

Will AI replace cyber security jobs is a common worry, and the safe reading is that it changes them. AI helps sort alerts and flag unusual activity faster.

Deciding what a threat means, responding to an incident and answering to the business still need trained people. Attackers use AI too, which raises the need for skilled defenders.

Treat the same logic as other technical roles: routine monitoring shrinks, judgment work grows.

What the evidence says for accountants and lawyers

Accounting

  • More clients per week
  • Statements close 7.5 days faster
  • Records kept in more detail

Law

  • Employment projected up 4 percent
  • Roles reshaped, not removed
  • Lawyers who use automation are rewarded

Two professions show how the pattern plays out. Research from Stanford and MIT Sloan questions whether AI just replaces accountants.

Accountants using AI served more clients each week and closed monthly statements 7.5 days sooner. Firms using generative AI also kept more detailed records.

In law, the Bureau of Labor Statistics still projects 4 percent growth in lawyer employment from 2024 to 2034.

A University of Iowa analysis draws the line clearly. Changing legal work and replacing lawyers are two different things.

  • Accountants using AI take on more clients each week
  • Monthly statements close 7.5 days faster with AI
  • Lawyer employment is still projected to grow 4 percent
  • Law graduates reached record employment rates in 2024

What a business can do now

For a business owner, the useful move is not to wait for a forecast. Look at which tasks in each role are repetitive, and automate those first so people spend time on judgment work.

FAQ

AI and jobs questions

  • Probably parts of it will change. List your tasks and mark the repetitive ones. Those are the most exposed. Work that needs judgment, trust or physical presence is much safer.
  • The WEF expects about 92 million jobs displaced by 2030, mostly roles built on routine tasks. It expects 170 million new jobs, so the net effect is projected growth.
  • No fixed list exists, but the safest groups are skilled trades, care work, teaching, negotiation-heavy sales and senior leadership. Each relies on judgment, trust or physical work.
  • The WEF 2025 report projects 92 million jobs displaced, 170 million created and a net gain of 78 million by 2030. Goldman Sachs warns of a period of higher unemployment during transition.
  • No evidence points that way. Forecasts show new roles created alongside displaced ones. Many jobs will change shape, and some people will need to retrain to follow the work.
  • Routine IT work such as ticket sorting and simple fixes is the most exposed. Architecture, security judgment and system ownership need people, so IT roles are changing rather than vanishing.
  • Yes. PwC's 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer reports a 56 percent wage premium for workers who learn AI tools, as cited by one industry blog.
  • Start with the repetitive tasks that eat hours, such as data entry and follow-up. Measure the hours saved, then move to the next task. Read will AI replace data analysts.
